UX & Interaction Design
meets healthcare

UX Designer for Medical Devices

Luckily, I am one of the earliest UX designers worked at Siemens Heathcare CT sector. Since 2017 I have been devoting to bring user friendly interfaces for CT image acquisition and post-processing softwares.

From then on, I witness how the influence of UX is growing. Numerous products and features that adopted UX solutions generated by me and my team are already successfully launched onto the market, including e.g. FAST Integrated workflow, smart patient marking for Radiotherapy, myExam companion, AI-Rad companion Chest CT, mobile Head CT...

my roles & UX deliverables

UX Designer in Agile Team

At CT Sector I worked in a cross-functional and international team. The teamwork followed the scrum software development process. UX concepts are provided in the early milestones and tested with internal test center as well as end-users. The test results gave us the insights to optimise our concept in an iterative process. UX assessment criteria followed the standard ISO9241-210 and IEC-62366.

Designing for Design System

As representative designer of CT I was involved in designing & promoting the user interface guideline by implementing and optimising them in the real application context. The insights from business line in practice helped the center UX department to improved the UI components with consideration of the actual circumstance.

Project coordination & collaboration

As UX designer I had the responsibility to make sure on one side the design is user friendly, meets the clinical requirements and conforms to the style guide. On the other side, to ensure that the UIs and Interactions are implemented appropriately by the development team. Hence, I also acted as coordinator to communicate ideas with product owner; conceptualize UI components and help optimize design system; elaborate concept & UI specification with developers; deal with feedbacks from the customers

Due to confidentiality reasons I only pick an example to demonstrate
how I worked and what UX deliverables I generated within the projects.

Understanding

User Empathy

I participated in user studies like filed observation, user interview, customer workshop to see users’ perspective on the products.

Project Requirements

For designing the UI for medical devices it is essential to have a good understanding of stakeholders’ motivation, product & marketing requirements, clinical & user requirements and other standards like IEC-62366 usability for medical devices.

Ideation & Design

Ideation

Building the knowledge together with expert & users.      Reframing the problems and thinking divergent.
Selecting the idea and thinking convergent.

Design

Using design tools e.g. Adobe XD, Illustrator, Photoshop, Sketch, Creating alternatives by considering e.g. technical constraints, hazard keys, safte-relevant & cyber-security relevant aspects. Style Guide limitation and so on.

Communicating Ideas &
Design Decision

Creating alternatives in different effort level.
Communicating ideas with key stakeholders & users & engineers.
Presenting the solutions by using visual language and examples.
Showing the value of UX improvements (e.g. user test result)

Prototyping

Wireframing in the early stage for gaining the first user feedback.
Low-fidelity prototypes for clarification with software engineers.
High-fidelity prototypes for formamtive usability test (e.g. iCUT)
Using different prototyping tools like Axure, Adobe XD, Sketch…

Usability Test

Expert Inspection & in-house usability test for gaining the first user reaction and finding usability problems in the early stage.

Usability test with customers to find strength and weakness of the concept. The findings were prioritized according to criticality for the further improvement.

Managing Feedbacks & Adjustments

Dealing with experts & user feedbacks.
Generating UX improvements according to the user test results.
Communicating with software developers and clinical experts.
Making effort assessment and proposing the feasible solution.

Multi-Modality
& Cross-Devices Adaption

Adapting the layout to various of devices (e.g different size, dark & light mode, landscape & portrait, mobile & desktop).
Communicating with other BLs (business line) when the module is used for multiple purposes and making multimodality adaption.

Create & Maintain Style Guide
Optimise new Design System

Before the launch of new brand identity and style guide. I created UI style guide for CT related touch products and was responsible for maintaining the UI sustainability. Afterwards, by restyling the UI with new Design System I contributed to adopt and optimise the UI components in practical case.

Documentation

Providing inputs (IxD & UI concepts) for documentation, including UI Specification, user manual, eIFU (electric instruction for use), usability test reports as well as hands out for development team.

Innovation & xBL Projects

I also provided my knowledge and expertise in the xBL (cross business line) projects. e.g. the project of building a common workflow for CT and MR. I participated in creating a future-state view of user experience and mapping out a long term vision.
